Sicily

A raft to save them

A group of young German utopians on Sunday moored a rescue platform for migrants off the Sicilian coast. They designed it, built it and financed it with crowdfunding. A delegation from the collective Zentrum für Politische Schönheit literally Center for Political Beauty- left the port of Licata shortly after dawn and at sea installed a floating platform as a kind of first aid for refugees. Six meters by six meters the platform is supplied with food, a mast and two anchors, plus a solar-powered telephone to call for help. The collective would like to install a thousand of them to create a humanitarian corridor in the international waters of the Strait of Sicily where thousands of migrants have lost their lives. They baptized this first platform Aylan 1 in memory of the Syrian boy found dead on the beach in Greece who moved the world. The cost? Twenty thousand euros which they raised through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo.
